Kashgar region is located in the southwest of Xinjiang, with one city and eleven counties under its administration. Kashgar city, the location of the administration agency, is 1473 kilometers (based on highway mileage) away from Urumchi, with a population of 3,365,600 (3,052,100 for ethnic minorities). It has the tilled land of 631,000 hectares, sown grain area of 282,000 hectares and sown cash crops area of 205,400 hectares. It belongs to warm temperate continental arid climate.Kashgar region has five rivers whose annual run-off is larger than 6 hundred million cubic meters, the total volume of river-water resources amounts to 122.17 hundred million cubic meters, the total volume of underground water resources is 86.81 hundred million cubic meters, forest area 438,500 hectares and natural pastureland 1,619,300 hectares. There are 16 kinds of first-rate wild animals under the state's protection and second-rate 53 kinds. The medicinal plants are mainly licorice, Cynomorium songaricum, Cistanche salsa, safflower and field dodder. Mineral resources include iron, mica, asbestos,jade, diamond, coal, phosphorus, barium, titanium and copper, with a total number of 38.

Kashi is the location of Kashi prefecture administration agency, called in full form of Kashigar, with a short form of Kashi. It is located at the west edge of the Taklimakan desert, with a total urban area of 150,000 Sq. kilometers, 1473 kilometers away from Urumqi. The city has a population of 324,500 in thirteen ethnic groups composed of Uygur, Han, Kirgiz, and Tajik, with Uygur making up 75%.This place used to be a key town along the Ancient Silk Road and the state of Shule, one of 36 states in the west region during the early West Han Dynasty. Shule Protectorate was twice set up here during the Tang Dynasty and it became one of four towns in the west region. In 1884, when Xinjiang was established as a province, Shule County was set up here. In 1952, Kashi city was found.Kashi is one of 24 well-known cities of culture and history in China. Located at the hub of the ancient Silk Road, it was a land of confluence for Sino-foreign cultural exchanges in ancient times, with a long-standing cultural background. In ancient times, many religions prevailed in Kashigar. The eastward diffusion of Buddhism influenced this place first when Kashigar was one of the first places where Buddhism was believed. After the rise of Islamism, this place became a base for this religion in the east of the Pamir. Kashi is a land of song and dance whose performing art was spread to the central plains as early as over 1,000 years ago. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, Shule music and dance enjoyed good reputation in Changan. The Twelve Mucam and Saynam, the music and dance that are still popular nowadays, are both bright flowers in the garden of Chinese arts.At present, the main industrial sectors in Kashi cover textile, machines, chemical, electric power, cement, carpet, leather, food processing. The transportation is more accessible, with direct flight to Urumqi, open of railway operation in January 2001 and entry of long-distance telephone into national automatic network.In February 1984, Kashi was open to the outside world. In May 1986, the Kunjirap Port was open to the citizens in the third country. Since than, an increasing number of Chinese and foreign tourists have their trip to Kashi. The place is filled with scenic spots and ancient remains. The Ida Kah Mosque is well known for its grand structure and splendid colors, enjoy 500 years history since it was built. The Apak Hoja Mazar is the most attractive one of numerous Islamic mausoleums, Mahmud Kashgari, who was buried here, is the author of the world classic Grand Turkic Dictionary, which is a rarity in the treasure house of Chinese and world cultural art with high academic value on the study of languages, literatures and music in Xinjiang and central Asia. Kashi Sunday Bazaar (country fair) is the biggest country fair location in Kashi region, which serves as an ideal place for tourists to experience Kashi folkways and civic culture.
