The Tarim,Junggar and other basins between the mountains in Xinjiang all have an abundance of water, land, light, and heat resources. Down through the years, the courageous and diligent peoples of Xin jiang have built irrigation ditches and reclaimed land to build their homes.Along the barren desert, they have used the fast-growing red willow shrubbery, the fragrant jujube tree, and the towering white poplar to build a 'great wall' to protect their "oases from the onslaught of the elements. Viewed from the vantage point of a plane, the oases are like pearls strung on necklaces that adorn the edges of the two big basins, a vivid contrast to the gray desert.
The oasis agriculture of Xinjiang covers 50 million mu of arable land with 100 million mu of reclaimable land that can be irrigated by snowmelt from the mountains. According to survey, the volume of exploitable water resources in Xinjiang ranks 4th in the entire country. Its light and heat resources are also unique. Its effective accumulation of heat is high which is conducive to the growth of crops. The variety of moderate climate crops here is complete and suitable for the growth of grain crops such as wheat, rice and corn, and cash crops such as cotton, sugarbeet, and fruit and melon.Xinjiang is slated to become one of China's important, comprehensive agricultural production bases.
