XPCC achieves water-saving irrigation in half of farmland
(Tianshannet) Updated: 2008-May-5 18:57:01

Average annual water savings volume reaches 400 million cubic meters

The latest statistics show that as of August 4, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps has realized water-saving irrigation in an area of over 750 hectares, accounting for 52.5% of the area sown by the Corps. Xinjiang has become China’s largest water-saving promotion farmland area.

Xinjiang experiences serious water shortages. Since the 1980s, Corps workers have been promoting water-saving irrigation technology in the region. Through technical innovation, the XPCC integrated Israeli drip irrigation under plastic film technology with domestic film irrigation technology; and successfully introduced this technology into the fields.

Now, the XPCC saves an average of 400 million cubic meters of water every year. The Corps has reduced water utilization from 1,000 cubic meters per mu to 500-700 cubic meters per mu. Water utilization efficiency has been lifted from 30% to over 50%. Last year, Shihezi Reclamation Area used drip irrigation under plastic film technology in 130 million mu of its 170 million mu cotton field. The gross cotton output exceeded 4 million dan; and produced a record breaking average yield.

Now, the crisis of water shortages on many farms has been alleviated.
