A report from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reveals that in 2002, the GDP of the Corps was expected to reach 22.25 billion yuan – up 13.5%. The average wage income of on-duty workers was expected to reach 7,760 yuan – up 12.5%. These two figures are both record highs.
The significant growth of economic benefits of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps is, in the first place, attributed to the improvement and optimization of agricultural structure. “Planting, livestock, and fruits and vegetable gardening,” have become the three pillars of agriculture instead of a single industry as in the past. Fixed assets investment increased by 12.2%. There was a breakthrough in infrastructure construction, especially highway construction. Import and export volume is expected to reach $1.1 billion, an increase of 70% over the previous year. Actual applied foreign capital will amount to $28.1 million, a value that increased 4.3 times.
