Production and export volume accounted for 56% of nation’s total
Tomato sauce produced by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, with its impeccable quality, is selling like hot cakes on the European and US markets. It was learnt that from January to October this year, the Corps produced a total of 200,000 tons of tomato sauce; and exported 61,400 tons to over 20 European and North American countries. Both output and export volume accounted for 56% of the country’s total. At present, 70% of tomato sauce products on the European market are from Xinjiang.
The Corps has attached great importance to vigorously developing leading enterprises in the tomato products industry. Xinjiang Chalkis Co., Ltd. is a listed company of the Corps. As the world’s third largest tomato products manufacturer, the company can produce 180,000 tons of tomato products annually. Driven by the leading enterprises like Chalkis Co., Ltd., Xinjiang has widely promoted the model of “international market + companies + bases + farmers” and rapidly expanded the area of tomato plants from less than 10,000 mu in 1999 to 267,000 mu this year. Recently, Xinjiang launched the construction of a production base covering an area of five million mu of tomato-based farmland. It is expected that the scale of tomato sauce production from Xinjiang will be the largest in the world in 2005.
