Kala Maili Natural Ecological Reserve
The Hoofed Animal Nature Reserve in Kala Maili Mountain is a low mountain range in east-west direction, which horizontally crosses over Junggar's hinterland, connecting Tianshan and Altai Mountain in south and north, closing to Beita Mountain,with a total area of about 17,000 square kilometers, and is Animals in Kala Maili Mountain mainly inside the territories of Fuyun County of Altay Prefecture and Qitai County of Changji Prefecture. The Hoofed Animal Nature Reserve in Kala Maili Mountain is formed with Gobi,hills, desert and hungriness, complex in landforms. It growswild grass and bushes of fescue, Aillum bidentadum, Artemisia lavandulaefolia, Achnatherum splendens, Tamarix chinensis,saxoul, etc. with water resources of Dishui Spring, Yema Spring,Hongsha Spring and Liushu Spring. The reservatrion area is tranquil and mysterious, with many wild animals residing in this natural merry land where human beings seldom visit.
Chigetai It is also called Asiatic Wied ass, with its body similar to a mule, the hair is dark brown with a brown fine line at its back, hair on the belly is in light white, usually is found of living in hungriness grassland areas. Chigetai has fast speed when running, tolerant with thirsty and is good at living in infertile environment. Like wild horses, they live on reed, sand sage brush and spear grass, period of rut and mating is every year's August and September, period of gestation is 11 months, each time giving birth to one baby. in the freezing winter season, they often hide to escape cold in Yadan landforms such as Town of Five Colors and City of Demons. Sometimes, tens of Chigetai can be seen running fast orderly on barren lands. Presently, there are about 2,500-3,000 of Chigetai in Kala Maili Nature Reserve.

Goitred gazelle Belonging to typical animals in barren and semi-barren hungriness, they live in the open areas of 2,000-3,000 meters above sea level, usually move in small groups of 4-10 in numbers. Very tolerant to drought, they live on ice grass, wild onions and spear grass. Mating in winter and giving birth in summer, they lays off 1-2 babies in one time. The hair is smoothly shining, in yellowish white color, with sharp and thin horns and a short tail, looking very thin in the body, very deft and fast while running. Walking on a road in Bay of Five Colors, you will often see one or two Goitred gazelle flashing on hills, and disappear in a second.
Goitred gazelle are national second class protected animals,vastly distribute in north-west of China and Mongolia, Russia,Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and some countries in Middle East.In China, there are four subspecies of North Xinjiang, South Xinjiang, Qaidam and Mongolia. These in Kala Maili Nature Reserve should belong to the subspecies of Junggar Basin in North Xinjiang. Goitred gazelle here once had a very big family, with their bodies seen ubiquitously. Their skins and furs are rarely valuable and the meat is very delicious to eat. Their horns,similar with the world famous "Antelope horns" from Saiga Antilope, have the function of medicine, and are expensive crude drugs. As they are fond of moving about in groups and have the habit of taking care each other, they are very easy to be caught. These characteristics have almost brought them to a calamity, with the number of Goitred gazelle in Junggar Basin sharply decreased from nearly 100,000 to the number of less than 2,000. in 1981, since the country set up Kala Maili Hoofed Wild Animal Nature Reserve, people's consciousness of wild animal protection has gradually increased and over-hunting has been forbidden. Presently, number of Goitred gazelle has been increased to about 15,000-18,000.
Wild Plants Garden Plants on desert are all those extremely strong in life; in order to resist against drought, most of them have their heaves degenerated into scale-shaped or string-shaped types, taking breath to have photosynthesis with their tender branches. Bushes in the hungriness scenic belt in Kala Maili Mountain are mainly: diversifolious poplar, Haloxylon persicum, Tamarix chinensis, spear grass, etc. all together about 20 kinds. Besides, there are valuable crude drugs such as Chinese synomorium and desert living Cistanche, etc.
