Urumqi is a multi-ethnic city. In this city, you could be attracted by distinct and colorful ethnic cultures and customs at any time. From the urban architecture to the layout of courtyards, from furniture and household utensils to food, drink and clothes, from the etiquette of respecting the seniority to the marriage custom, you are absolutely surrounded by ethnic cultures. Today, the major ethnic minorities in Xinjiang are the Uygur, the Hui and the Manchu.

The Uygur has the largest population of all the ethnic groups in Xinjiang. Most of the Uygur people live in southern Xinjiang. The Uygur has a long history. In the books and records of the Qin and Han Dynasties, it was called Dingling(丁零).In the period of the Wei, Jin and the Southern and Northern Dynasties, it was called Tiele(铁勒), Chile(敕勒), and Gaoche(高车). In the books and records of the Sui and Tang Dynasty, it was called Huihu(回纥) and Huihu(回鹘) later. In the historical documents of the 11th century, it was recorded as Weiwuer(畏兀儿), the name Uygur(维吾尔)gradually became popular and fixed.

The Uygur is an ethnic group that attaches great importance to ceremony and propriety. On many important moments,special ceremony will be held. Apart from weddings and funerals, other ceremonies include the ceremony of childbirth before a pregnant gives birth; the naming ceremony after a baby was born; and the ceremony of circumcision when a boy is 5 to 7 years old.

The Uygur have lots of taboos. They are forbidden from eating pork, donkey meat, dog meat, mule meat and camel meat. In some areas of the southern Xinjiang, the Uygur people are not allowed to eat horse meat, pigeon and any dead livestock. When the Uygur people sleep, they cannot let their feet pointing to the west as the holy place of Islam is in the west.Smoking marijuana (drug), gambling, drink excessively, and lying are seen as bad behaviors. People are strictly forbidden from peeing or defecating in mazars, mosques, reservoirs and kitchens. When talking and eating inside a house, people are forbidden from spitting, blowing his nose and yawning.

The Uygur people are good at singing and dance and it is said that "they can sing and dance when they start to speak."The Uygur people like singing and dancing. In big festivals and celebrations, or even in an ordinary day, people often get together to sing and dance. Their happy life is very admirable. The Uygur dance is supple, graceful and charming. In many Uygur ethnic restaurants, people could watch Uygur performers dance. The popular dances include the plate dance, the hand-drum dance, the Sabayi dance and the Samawar dance.
