European Council calls for increased efforts towards Digital Single Market

  BRUSSELS, March 22 (Xinhua) -- The European Council on Thursday called that increased efforts must be delivered on the Digital Single Market strategy, the Energy Union and the Single Market strategy.

  It said in a statement that the European Union (EU) needs to keep working towards a fair single market that is fit for the digital age and an enabler for competitiveness, innovation and sustainability by examining the proposals related to these strategies and implementing effectively the decisions already taken.

  The European Council emphasised that the EU needs a strong industrial policy in order to reap the maximum benefits of the Single Market.

  While at the same time, it said that social networks and digital platforms need to guarantee transparent practices and full protection of citizens' privacy and personal data.

  Apart from these, the European Council also asked the European Commission to present a proposal for a strategy of long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reduction in accordance with the Paris Agreement by the first quarter of 2019.

  The two-day spring European Council kicked off on Thursday and heads of state or government gathered to discuss a series of issues, including Digital Single Market strategy, taxation, Brexit and eurozone.
