From a green hand to a key member in oil well

Kaysar Mamatniyaz, who majored in nursing, puts on a "red labour suit" and does oil drilling.

Kaysar studied nursing in Changji Vocational and Technical College. When he first graduated in 2018, he applied to work in a hospital, but the salary was not ideal. Determined to give his parents a better life as soon as possible, Kaysar decided to change his career. He looked for a new job through the talent market and applied to Zhundong Drilling Company of CNPC West Drilling Engineering Co., Ltd., where the monthly salary is higher than the former work.

“My family planted 20 mu of jujube trees and my mother has heart disease and has been taking medicine. There is also a younger sister in junior high school in my family. I want to lighten the financial burden on my family.” Kaysar said.

In 2019, Kaysar came to the new company in Karamay. "I was assigned to the 70547 drilling team. When I first went to well site, I didn't know anything. The site was full of iron equipment and iron pipes. I didn't know how to use these iron blocks and iron pipes, let alone how to operate the drilling." Kaysar said.

At that time, Kaysar was the only new employee in the drilling team. In order to understand the drilling operating principle and process, Kaysar asked everyone he met, smiling and demanding "answers" regardless of whether they were willing to answer or not.

“It is a good thing that a young man is willing to learn and ask questions when he does not understand.” said Cai Zhengda, captain of 70547 drilling team. When Kaysar first came, although no special master was assigned to guide him, everyone on the team was his master.

“When applying casing pipes, we should climb to the second platform of the derrick that is 30 or 40 meters high. I remember the first time I climbed to the second platform and looked down, I got cold feet.” Kaysar recalled. At the beginning of learning drilling operation, I was afraid of lifting the drill. Only after I was proficient in various skills did I slowly overcome the fear of climbing.

With the help of colleagues and Kaysar’s own efforts, his operational skills gradually improved. Not content with that, he bought books to study theoretical knowledge and obtained various operation certificates. In the past three years, he has successively obtained oil drilling operation certificate, hydrogen sulfide protection training certificate, climbing certificate, hoisting certificate and driller operation certificate.

Now, Kaysar has grown from a green hand to a key member of the team, and fell in love with the drilling industry.

Last year, after returning home from vacation, Kaysar renovated his house, replaced his tractor and a LCD TV and he also bought smartphones for his parents, fulfilling his dream of a better life for his family.

Kaysar is 26 years old now, and he currently is learning more difficult skills from Cai Zhengda in preparation for junior technician certificate examination. “Down-to-earth and working steadily. My aim is to get a senior technician certificate.” Kaysar said.
