The Eagle Whisperers deep in the mountains

Photo taken on May 19, 2022 shows Kurmash Hutman (middle), a villager in Jialangqi Village in Aheqi Town of Aheqi County, northwest China’s Xinjiang, displays a falcon with his son and apprentice. Kurmash Hutman, who is 71 years old, is a representative trustee of the national intangible cultural heritage representative project of the Kirgiz falconry custom. Kurmash has been with eagles since he was a child, and is a veritable "Eagle Whisperer". It is not easy to train a ferocious wild eagle to be an obedient falcon. It takes a lot of efforts and careful feeding by the falconer. From generation to generation of falconers, word of mouth has formed a set of unique skills including taking eagles, not letting the eagle sleep, taming eagles, and releasing eagles.
