Dongdaohaizi is located on the edge of the Gurbantunggut Desert, and is surrounded by lush plants and clear water.

Dongdaohaizi is a tail-end lake in the lower reaches of Urumqi River, and is about 100 kilometers away from the center of Urumqi City. It is a typical desert wetland in Xinjiang.

Dongdaohaizi is formed by the gathering of snow water from the Tianshan Mountains, agricultural irrigation residual water and natural rainfall entering the Beishawo. It connects with five small lakes such as Baijiahaizi and Zhengjiahaizi on the west side, and covers a water area of about 2,000 square kilometers.
