Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Fenerbahce in EuroLeague basketball

JERUSALEM, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv achieved a 78-74 home win over Turkey's Fenerbahce in the 27th round of basketball's EuroLeague on Wednesday evening.

It was Maccabi's 14th win from 27 games, while Fenerbahce remain with 16 wins out of 26 games.

In front of 11,000 fans at the Menorah Mivtachom Arena in Tel Aviv, Fenerbahce dominated the first quarter which ended 25-17. Lorenzo Brown and Roman Sorkin helped Maccabi get back to business and take a 43-39 lead at halftime.

Johnathan Motley led the visitors to reach a 56-56 tie, but points by Bonzie Colson and John DiBartolomeo gave Maccabi a 61-56 lead at the end of the third quarter.

An excellent fourth quarter by Colson inspired Maccabi to increase the margin to 71-61, but a 10-0 run by Fenerbahce, led by Nemanja Bjelica, tied the score at 71 with 1:49 on the clock.

With the hosts leading 76-73 and with 20 seconds to go, Scottie Wilbekin, who joined Fenerbahce this season after four years at Maccabi, scored only one of two from the line.

Then, with 15 seconds left, Colson scored two free throws. Marko Guduric then missed a three-pointer and Suleiman Braymoh took the defensive rebound to secure the win.

Brown scored game-high 21 points for Maccabi, while teammate Wade Baldwin added 15. Nigel Hayes scored 16 points for Fenerbahce.

Maccabi will next face Anadolu Efes in Turkey, while Fenerbahce will host Barcelona, with both games scheduled for Friday.
