On August 9, 2023, at Lianyungang Container Terminal, we, the reporter team of "Road of Prosperity – Belt and Road Reporting Project" were allowed to go to the bridge crane cab 50 meters above the ground to experience the daily life of bridge crane drivers.

As we entered into the bridge crane cab, Chen Fengyang, a bridge crane driver of Lianyungang New Oriental International Container Terminal Co., Ltd., was attentively operating the handle, completely unaware of anyone entering. Chen Fengyang stared at the lock of the lifting appliance nearly 50 meters below, lifting the container from the cargo ship's warehouse to the container tractor in the dock. It took about 2 minutes, and the entire operation was carried out smoothly and accurately, just like using a joystick to "catch a doll".

“I came to work at the port in 2005 and was initially assigned to operate gantry crane. I learned how to operate a gantry crane and was able to drive the second largest gantry crane at a container terminal. I was already very satisfied at the time,” Chen Fengyang said. After working for 3 years, Chen Fengyang was selected for a more challenging position due to his excellent skills to operate the bridge crane, the largest and highest mechanical equipment on the terminal.

Chen Fengyang has been working for ten years, and he has witnessed the development and changes of Lianyungang Port since the Belt and Road Initiative was put forward. Working at somewhere high every day allowed him to see scenes that others could not see. Freight ships from different countries and of different tonnages enter and exit the port, and the throughput of the port is increasing year by year. Various containers in the port yard are piled up, and container tractors are like ants lining up to transport containers in and out. “Over the years, I have definitely shipped containers to Xinjiang through the New Eurasian Land Bridge. To do my job well and ensure safe production is my contribution to the Belt and Road Initiative.”
