Ulanbay Ancient City in NW China's Xinjiang officially opens

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Zhang Wande) news: On September 15, 2024, Ulanbay Ancient City, located 17 kilometers south of Urumqi, officially opened its door to visitors. Visitors can explore the history exhibition hall of the ancient city, walking along pathways to view the well-preserved southern city wall and east gate. On the same day, the "Base for Chinese Painting on Mulberry Paper" was inaugurated here. The opening ceremony also featured 11 Akhal-teke horses.

The Ulanbay Ancient City had a trial opening on September 1, 2024, and has since received about 5,000 visitors. The historical exhibition hall of the ancient city encompasses three sections, presenting the history of this ancient city, which dates back over 1,300 years, along with its significant historical and cultural value in areas such as territorial governance, military defense, urban construction and development, history of the Tuntian system, and taxation systems. The hall also compares artifacts from the same era, including those from Ulanbay, Gaochang (Qocho) city ruins, and the Astana tombs in Turpan, highlighting the use of similar construction materials and currency during that period.

Additionally, on that day, an intangible cultural heritage exhibition showcasing the traditional mulberry paper-making techniques, was set up at the ancient city exhibition hall by Wei Baoshan, head of the Xinjiang Runjiang Chinese Painting Institute and inheritor of Chinese painting on mulberry paper. The exhibition displayed dozens of poetic works on mulberry paper, which are themed around the works of the Tang Dynasty poet Cen Shen. Wei Baoshan said, "Many of the poems Cen Shen wrote belong to the genre of frontier poetry. To deeply explore and showcase the historical culture of Ulanbay and tell the stories of Urumqi, we created and exhibited mulberry paper works themed on Cen Shen's poetry, allowing visitors to genuinely experience the essence of poetry and distant lands at Ulanbay Ancient City."
