Researchers in Xinjiang successively cultivate a new grape variety

Under lush vines, grapes with jasper green and as big as quail eggs hung in clusters.

The grape greenhouse in the experimental field of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has recently witnessed the maturation of a new high-quality variety, cultivated by researchers from the academy. This variety is characterized by its early maturity and seedlessness.

Pop a grape into your mouth at random, chew it, and the crisp sweetness and intense rose fragrance will make you want to savor it again and again.

The variety successfully cultivated by researchers of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region through nine years of efforts has a unique taste. At present, the variety has matured, with its ear weight of about 800 grams, and the yield of 1.2 tons to 1.5 tons per mu.

In 2015, the fruit quality control post team of the national grape industry technology system introduced the precious variety from Pomology Institute of Shanxi Province. After the introduction, the cultivation technology of this variety was optimized through different anvil and ear combination test, different fruit management test, plant growth regulator application test and matching fertilization management test.

After six years of efforts, the researchers have determined the growth and development characteristics of the variety, and the appropriate cultivation mode. In the past three years, researchers have continuously optimized the planting technology of this variety, forming a high-quality and efficient cultivation technology system for the grape variety.

Through the application of comprehensive control technology, the grape variety has a high yield and excellent appearance, with complete and beautiful ear shapes, as well as a grain weight of more than six grams, fruit sugar content of more than 20, thin and fine skin, crispy texture and sweet taste, and intense and pure rose aroma.

Zhang Wen, an expert on fruit quality control in the national grape industry technology system and a researcher at the Horticultural Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, said, “The grape hanging period of the variety is 60 days, and with strong continuous fruit ability, it can achieve two harvests a year, which is suitable for leisure and sightseeing picking routes."

It is understood that, in the past, the difficulty of the common cultivation technology of this variety made it hard to be promoted on the market. Today, after researchers’ hard work, the planted grapes of the variety have good taste, more intense flavor, excellent appearance and quality, and have broad application prospects in the field of facility cultivation.
