Xinjiang’s village of ethnic musical instrument welcomes tourists

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Otkur Nijat) news: On June 29, 2025, the team of the "Xinjiang on the frontier" large-scale media tour celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, visited Tuowankewukusake Village, Wukusake Town, Shufu County, Kashi Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which is famous for making traditional musical instruments. They explored the village's innovative approach combining cultural tourism, intangible cultural heritage preservation, and local industry development.

The village has preserved the tradition of crafting ethnic musical instruments through family workshops for over 150 years. Today, it produces more than 50 varieties across 27 categories, representing nearly all of Xinjiang's traditional ethnic instruments.

The village is also home to an ethnic musical instruments museum, covering 1,027 square meters and featuring three sections: string/wind instruments, bowed/percussion instruments, and an interactive zone, with 83 instruments from 19 categories on display. Notably, the museum holds Guinness World Records for the world's largest Rawap, Dutar, and Satar.

In 2024, with the pairing assistance of Guangdong Province, Shufu County invested 15 million yuan (about 2.11 million U.S. dollars) to expand and enhance the village, adding a guesthouse street, a food court, and improved infrastructure to boost cultural tourism and support rural revitalization. This year, an additional 27.23 million yuan (about 3.82 million U.S. dollars) from the program is funding further upgrades, including a renovated musical instrument museum, a new history museum, and alleyway improvements, transforming the village into a cultural tourism hub that showcases Xinjiang's musical heritage and Shufu's local traditions.

Once completed, the upgrades will greatly increase the site's appeal, boosting revenue from tickets, dining, lodging, and retail. Local residents will also benefit, with opportunities in site operations, homestays, catering, guided tours, and other services, enabling them to earn income without leaving their community.

The renovated village will serve as Shufu County's new tourism calling card, boosting its visibility and reputation both domestically and internationally. This distinctive cultural tourism brand will attract increased investment and development opportunities, driving comprehensive economic and social progress in the county.
