Urumqi's international mail volume up 354.5 pct in H1 2025

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Chen Qiangwei) news: According to Customs at Urumqi Tianshan International Airport, the office oversaw 835,800 locally declared inbound and outbound postal items in the first half of the year, up 354.5 percent year on year, signaling a surge in Urumqi’s international mail business.

In the first half of 2025, 824,400 outbound mails were sent from Urumqi City, up 374.6 percent year-on-year, and 11,400 inbound mails were received, up 11.5 percent year-on-year. The outbound mail, mainly consisting of daily necessities and light industrial items, is primarily sent to Kazakhstan.

The surge is driven by the booming e-commerce demand in Central Asia. In recent years, countries such as Kazakhstan have seen rapid e-commerce growth, raising expectations for faster and more economical inbound parcels. With its low cost and swift customs clearance, postal shipping has become the preferred choice, driving Urumqi’s international mail volumes ever higher.

To keep the "postal channel" running smoothly, Customs at Urumqi Tianshan International Airport is actively helping local firms take on cross-border e-commerce parcels sent as mail. It's guiding platform operators and logistics companies to make full use of the new measures that boost Xinjiang's cross-border e-commerce, rolling out a one-stop platform for inbound and outbound mail, and ensuring both trade and non-trade logistics keep flowing without a hitch.
