What is Xinjiang today?

Over the last seven decades, Xinjiang has told the world a story of development miracles. Back in 1952, regional economy was merely 791 million yuan. Today, it has soared to 2 trillion yuan — a three-digit increase in real terms. Once inaccessible, the region now boasts 230,000 km of highways, 9,200 km of railway tracks and 28 airports.

The people have benefited from the development. In today's Xinjiang, poverty is a past tense. School-age children in southern Xinjiang are offered with 15-year free education. Average life expectancy is 77 years. People of different communities are holding together like pomegranate seeds. A key hub along the Belt and Road Initiative, Xinjiang is playing an especially greater role in connecting China with Eurasia. In 2024, over 16,400 China-Europe freight trains left China from land ports in Xinjiang.

As the latest white paper China released on Xinjiang said, today's Xinjiang is experiencing the best period of development in its history. Acting on its vision of building 10 industrial clusters and taking bigger steps in opening-up, Xinjiang is poised for even greater success.
