Ajiakbar Aysa, a Uygur pharmacologist who has been dedicated to the research of ethnic medicine for over 30 years, was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, according to an announcement released on November 21.
Ajiakbar's research has set up national standards for the development of new drug based on medicinal herbs in Xinjiang, and facilitated the commercialization of research results in this field, according to the profile of the pharmacologist on the official website of Xinjiang Medical University. Ajiakbar serves as president of the university.
Six types of new drugs Ajiakbar and his team developed have been approved for clinical trials by China's medical products authorities, noted the profile.

Ajiakbar also contributed to promoting China's ethnic medicine worldwide. He heads a China-Uzbekistan joint laboratory for new drug development and has been working to share the research results of his team with Central Asian countries.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, China's top academic institutions, add new academicians every two years by election. The new additions for 2025 were announced on November 21, with 144 new academicians from China and 51 from abroad included on the registry.
