Turpan grapes sweetly win over fans in southeast Asia

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter He Jiang) news: The peak sales season for fresh table grapes just passed, yet Rezyemu Abulimu, the secretary of Party Branch Committee and director of Jiayi Village in the Hongxing area of Gaochang District, Turpan City, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was already bustling with activity once again. On November 23, 2025, she was busy running around to handle the export qualifications for next year's fresh table grapes. All of this stemmed from a phone call from a distributor in Vietnam, who stated that the village’s seedless white grapes are incredibly popular and that they were willing to purchase grapes the village produces in the future on a long-term basis.

This very year, under the leadership of Rezyemu, the Turpan Duyong Fruit Industry Farmers' Professional Cooperative was established and successfully exported 40 tons of seedless white grapes to Vietnam. These sweet fruits from Turpan were in such high demand in the Vietnamese market that they quickly sold out. The distributor expressed a clear intention for long-term cooperation and planned to introduce seedless white grapes to more markets in Southeast Asian countries. This development has brought genuine joy to Rezyemu and the villagers, as they witness their high-quality fruits making their way into the world.

Stepping into the multi-span greenhouse base for grapes in Jiayi Village, one is greeted by a warm, spring-like atmosphere inside, where the suitable temperature prevents the grapevines from being buried underground for the winter. The modified trellis system allows sunlight to evenly bathe the grapevines. The integrated water and fertilizer system precisely controls the amounts applied, and IoT devices provide real-time feedback on temperature and humidity data.

The endeavor as sweet as the grapes in Jiayi Village serves as a vivid microcosm of the comprehensive upgrade of the grape industry in Gaochang District. In recent years, Gaochang District has been advancing grape production from empirical cultivation to standardized farming, in line with the distinctive, organic, and high-end goals set by the city of Turpan.

Cui Hongyin, the secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Gaochang District, stated that Gaochang District cultivates grapes on 290,000 mu (about 19,333.33 hectares) of land. It has completed the trellis transformation on 220,000 mu (about 14,666.67 hectares), enabling the low-lying grape trellises to grow higher, improving ventilation and light transmission, and thereby enhancing production efficiency. The district has also advanced a high-efficiency water-saving project covering 250,000 mu (about 16,666.67 hectares) of grape cultivation, achieving precise irrigation while conserving water. Additionally, it has promoted the "three modifications, two controls, and one optimization" planting model, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides while increasing the application of organic fertilizers and biological agents. Currently, 240,000 mu (about 16,000 hectares) of seedless white grapes in Gaochang District have been certified as standardized production bases for national green food raw materials.

The improvement in quality ultimately needs to be translated into tangible benefits through the market. In recent years, Gaochang District has launched a coordinated marketing "combo punch" that integrates both online and offline approaches. Online, local live-streaming teams connect grapes directly from the fields to the dining tables of consumers across the country. Offline, through hosting industry seminars and promotional events, merchants from various regions are invited to visit the vineyards, witness the quality firsthand, and establish trust. Additionally, direct supply agreements with large supermarkets have been signed to streamline the distribution process, achieving a win-win situation where farmers sell with ease and consumers shop with assurance.

According to statistics from the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Gaochang District, Turpan City, the export volume of fresh table grapes from Gaochang District reached 10,040 tons this year.
