On December 1, 2025, the first rays of light brushed over the slumbering wilderness at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains like gentle feathers. At the Swan Lake Wetland Park in Yining County, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a symphony of light and life had already begun its quiet overture before the break of day.
The morning mist rose from the spring's surface like the final breath of warmth from the cold night, veiling the water in a flowing, ethereal gauze. The rosy light of dawn, like a composed painter using the sky as its palette, dipped into hues of rose gold, soft orange, and delicate pink to gently wash over the scene, transforming the entire expanse below into a magnificent canvas. Against this dreamlike backdrop, 533 distinguished guests — graceful mute swans and dignified whooper swans — were awakening leisurely.
Some arched their necks in quiet inquiry, their long beaks lightly tapping the mirror-like water, sending ripples edged in gold across the surface. Others swept their wings wide, as if to take flight, carving bright, gleaming arcs through the misty warmth of the radiant dawn. They appeared not to swim through the spring's chill, but to glide upon waves of molten gold. Mated pairs intertwined their long necks, tracing gentle, heart-shaped silhouettes against the sky. Their reflections wavered upon the warm water like intimate whispers, recounting the tenderness of an unbroken companionship that had endured a thousand miles.
This is the eternal ritual, a testament to life renewed with each passing year. Every September, they embark from distant Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan, traversing mountains and deserts to find their destined sanctuary in this oasis nestled within the embrace of the Tianshan Mountains. Here, unfrozen warm springs ward off the bitter cold; lush aquatic plants provide ample sustenance; and a tranquil, pristine environment offers a secure haven from their epic journey. Thus, this wetland stands as more than an indispensable winter refuge—it is a living poem, an eloquent ode to the harmonious coexistence of life and nature.
