Urumqi-Yuli Expressway cuts mail delivery time

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Fan Qiongyan) news: Urumqi and Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture can now provide "same-day delivery" for mail.

Following the opening of the G0711 Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, the Urumqi Mail Center, which serves as an inter-provincial mail sorting hub, launched a trial operation of this postal route on January 5, 2026, based on prior research. Once fully operational, mail between Urumqi and Korla City, as well as the eight counties under Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, will be delivered on the same day instead of the next, marking a major improvement in postal efficiency between northern and southern Xinjiang.

At 1:30 p.m. that day, a 9.6-meter postal truck carrying 1,270 express parcels left the Urumqi Mail Center processing facility and arrived at the Korla Mail Processing Center by 6:30 p.m.

"With the new expressway, mail delivery takes almost half the time it used to," said Mahmutjan Ubulkasi, a long-distance driver with the transportation center of Urumqi Mail Center, who was assigned to the route. He explained that the old mountain road was winding and often congested in winter snow, while the new road is wide and smooth, saving time and making driving much more comfortable.

The day before, a dedicated newspaper delivery route from Urumqi to Korla officially began operations, utilizing the newly opened Urumqi-Yuli Expressway. The route uses 4.2-meter postal trucks, completing the journey in just four hours. This enables same-day delivery of Party newspapers and periodicals to Korla City and the four surrounding counties of Bohu, Yanqi Hui Autonomous County, Hejing, and Heshuo, reducing delivery time by nearly a full day compared to the previous schedule.

According to Zheng Xinwei, a dispatcher in the Production Control Department of the Urumqi Mail Center, once the postal route via the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway is fully operational, mail delivery time to Korla will be reduced by half a day, and to the eight counties by more than a day. All locations will benefit from same-day delivery, which will help meet the increasing demand for postal and courier services in the region.

Zheng Xinwei added that the opening of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway provides key support for the Urumqi Mail Center to optimize its postal network and improve service quality, contributing to a more efficient and smoother flow of goods and information between northern and southern Xinjiang.
