Turning more saline-alkali land into mew granaries

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Li Jiani) news: "She has demonstrated with actions the responsibility of a CPPCC member who cares about public opinions and sincerely works for the people," said Luo Junjie, a grower from Sunzhaqiniulu Town, Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on January 21, 2026.

As a member of the 13th Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a senior agronomist at the Agricultural Technology Extension Station of Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County's Agriculture and Rural Bureau, Guan Liju devotes most of her time to agricultural service and guidance. From spring ploughing to autumn harvest, from saline-alkali land improvement test fields to farmers' contracted plots, she solves problems in agricultural production and delivers professional services right where they are most needed.

A young returnee entrepreneur, Luo Junjie encountered numerous difficulties in farming and sought advice from Guan Liju many times. Her support goes beyond answering questions promptly. During busy farming seasons, she takes the initiative to send messages or make calls to check on his planting situation. If she notices crop disease symptoms in other towns, she even takes photos to remind him to take preventive measures in advance, helping him avoid planting risks.

To help farmers master scientific planting techniques and lay a solid foundation for spring ploughing preparations, Guan Liju and her colleagues have been traveling to various towns and townships in Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County since the start of the month during the slack season. They carry out practical agricultural technology training covering high-quality variety selection, green pest control, fertilizer reduction and efficiency improvement, and high-yield and efficient technologies for food crops, bringing technical courses directly to farmers.

"During the slack season, Guan Liju could have taken a break, but she takes farmers' affairs as her own," Luo Junjie said. He has participated in many training sessions led by Guan Liju. During breaks, he often sees her chatting with farmers to understand their needs, and can feel that she takes ensuring food security and increasing farmers' income as the core of her duties.

The construction of high-standard farmland is closely linked to saline-alkali land management. As a key measure to improve the productivity of saline-alkali land and realize its comprehensive utilization, it not only lays a solid foundation for ensuring food security but also effectively promotes increased land output and farmers' income. Aware of its importance, Guan Liju has always prioritized technical services related to high-standard farmland construction.

"Whether in daily work or as a CPPCC member, she is diligent and dedicated. Everyone sees it and is proud to have such a colleague," said her colleague An Rongrong. Guan Liju has been rooted in the front line to carry out agricultural technology services, focusing on increasing grain output and farmers' income. Last year, she led the team to focus on farmland improvement, took the initiative to apply for a research project on the impact mechanism of organic matter improvement on food crop yields, and led the experimental demonstration of organic fertilizer gradient application combined with straw returning to the field, providing technical parameters for soil improvement projects in high-standard farmland construction.

During her tenure in 2024, Guan Liju paid special attention to saline-alkali land management, a key issue restricting local agricultural development, during her visits, investigations and exchanges with farmers. How to revitalize saline-alkali land and achieve high yields is not only the dream of local farmers but also a constant concern of hers.

Guided by the vision of "turning more saline-alkali land into new granaries," Guan Liju actively collaborated with Xinjiang Agricultural University to complete the saline-alkali land improvement plan last year, formulating regional improvement technical schemes based on the county's planting structure and salinization degree.

"Over the past 25 years at work, apart from dealing with the land, I have spent more time chatting with farmers and passing on technologies," Guan Liju said. Fields are the best laboratories. She will perform her duties as a CPPCC member to a higher standard, continue to take root in the fields, deliver technologies to the grassroots, bring public opinions to the conference venue, and contribute to ensuring food security and advancing rural revitalization.
