Ma Jianghong, also known as Beima Yangjing, is a gourd carving artist from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. She carries on the local tradition of turning gourds into decorative vessels, which symbolize good fortune in Chinese culture, as the name "Hulu" (gourd) sounds like "fu lu" (blessings and prosperity) in Chinese.
Her art features ultra-thin carving, with up to 40 layers on a single gourd. Inspired by the murals from Kizil Caves and Dunhuang Grottos, she recreates figures depicted on those murals on gourds by carefully adapting each design to follow the natural shape of the gourd. The joy of creation carries her into the world of ancient times.
