Nesting Together on Bosten Lake: Waiting for New Life

2026-04-14 17:36

On April 10, 2026, under the bright sunshine, a vivid scene of avian nesting unfolded at Luoxia Bay along the road encircling Bosten Lake in Bohu County, Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Amid the reeds, the nests of egrets, grey herons, and cormorants sat less than two meters apart. The egrets lay quietly, guarding their pale cyan eggs; grey herons, necks drawn in and eyes lowered, remained as motionless as sculptures; the cormorants, their dark feathers slightly spread, would lower their heads to turn the eggs in their nests from time to time. As the warm breeze swept across the reed beds, they waited in stillness for the arrival of new life.
