Xinjiang's Hongshanzui Port opens for seasonal passage after winter closure

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Hei Hongwei) news: At 13:00 on June 2, 2026, three travelers from Mongolia's Bayan-Olgii Province entered China through Xinjiang's Hongshanzui Port. They were the first cross border travelers at the port this year, marking the official start of the seasonal opening of Hongshanzui Port.

Hongshanzui Port is located in Fuhai County, Altay Prefecture, on the border with Mongolia's Bayan-Olgii Province. It is a seasonal road port agreed upon by China and Mongolia. Under the bilateral agreement, the port is open from June to September each year. This year's operating period will also run until September. The smooth passage will continue to facilitate border visits between Chinese and Mongolian communities and cross border trade.

Infrastructure upgrades have strengthened the port's capacity. In July 2025, a section of the G216 highway connecting Altay city to Hongshanzui Port opened to traffic. The route was shortened from 192 kilometers to 95 kilometers, cutting travel time from four to five hours to a much shorter duration. This has greatly reduced travel time and improved the efficiency of cross border passenger and cargo transport. According to Altay Customs under Urumqi Customs, during the port's operating period in 2025, 1,480 cross border travelers passed through the port, an increase of 140.7 percent year on year. The port has seen steady growth in activity.
