Driverless shuttle buses put into operation at Urumqi Tianshan International Airport

Urumqi Tianshan International Airport put into operation a fleet of 16 driverless shuttle buses on July 28, 2026. It is the first large-scale deployment of such vehicles in China, with each of the 12-meter buses serving all 72 remote stands at the airport.

"The 12-meter Yutong high-end electric autonomous buses deployed this time are equipped with domestically developed intelligent driving platforms and high-grade safety systems. Capable of full-scenario operations including autonomous obstacle avoidance, passage through tunnels and jet bridges, precise docking and automatic U-turns, they adapt to Xinjiang's unique climate and apron operating conditions," said Chen Wengang, an official with Xinjiang Airport (Group) Co., Ltd.

Up to now, Xinjiang Airport Group has deployed more than 100 autonomous vehicles and automatic control equipment of various types at Urumqi Tianshan International Airport.
