American professor: My trip to Xinjiang revealed a deep strategic logic

Recently, a group of international visitors arrived in Karamay, Xinjiang, for an up-close experience of the city’s unique allure as an “Oil City,” gaining first-hand insight into its energy sector and emerging industries.

Professor Josef Gregory Mahoney of East China Normal University's School of Politics and International Relations said that what impressed him most was Karamay's rapid breakthroughs in renewable energy, water security, and energy storage upgrades. The city is combining its traditional oil advantages with green transformation — its cold climate and stable geological conditions make it an ideal location for data centers powered by renewable energy, while the extension of oil refining into higher value‑added products resonates with the Digital Silk Road strategy.
