Xinjiang Show⑳ | Haikaifu's Sweet Dough

In Tacheng, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Haikaifu, a fourth-generation inheritor of the Tatar traditional pastry-making technique, returned to his hometown after college in 2019 to carry on his mother's craft. In 2021, the technique was recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage.

Haikaifu believes that craftsmanship should not be kept within the family. He has trained over a hundred students from all over the country with no reservation. He also brings the craft to schools and communities through outreach activities. For him, pastry-making is more than a skill but also brings people together and keeps the tradition alive.
