Foreign experts see potential for cooperation after attending Xinjiang meteorology forum

On September 22, 2026, the Second China–Central Asia Meteorological Cooperation Forum, themed "Advancing People-Centered Early Warnings to Safeguard Regional Development and Security," kicked off in Urumqi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Officials and experts from meteorological and hydrological departments of nine countries attended the forum. The forum released the "MAZU" action plan and delivered the customized version to Nepal. "MAZU" is an intelligent early warning solution by CMA, integrating Fengyun satellite data and AI models. It can quickly identify and accurately warn of rainstorms, heatwaves, and severe convection.

During the forum, meteorologists from Nepal and Pakistan were interviewed.

Sanjib ADHIKARI, a Nepali meteorologist said it was his first time in China, with Urumqi as his first stop. He noted that China's meteorological services are well developed and expressed hope to send personnel to attend training courses or long-term study programs. He praised the "MAZU" platform for detecting and monitoring disasters, noting that high-resolution satellite products can provide early warnings for dust storms and help keep people safe.

Muhammad AYAZ, a Pakistani meteorologist said that Xinjiang's meteorological work involves extensive efforts in disaster management, climate prediction, and early warning, and that this experience is very useful for Pakistan. floods and flash floods in the northern mountainous areas. He hopes to continue cooperation with Xinjiang in agriculture, disasters, and climate change.

Both experts agreed that China's meteorological technology is practical and Xinjiang's meteorological work is worth learning from, and they look forward to strengthening cooperation in the future.
