Maldives hands over land to construct new Chinese chancery

MALE, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives Foreign Ministry has handed over a plot of land to construct a new Chinese chancery building in the Maldives, local media reports said here Thursday.

During a function held at the foreign ministry, the document for the new chancery building was handed over by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid to Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Zhang Lizhong.

As the Maldives government had decided not to develop any new government office buildings in capital Male City, a 30,000 square feet area has been allocated from Hulhumale, a reclaimed island located in the south of North Male Atoll, to develop foreign embassies and missions.

So far, land plots from the Hulhumale Diplomatic Enclave has been provided for India and Sri Lanka and China.
