Bortala, which means "green grassland " in Mongolian, it's known as “the exotic land of the west, the spiritual retreat away from the turmoil.” Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (hereinafter referred to as Bortala) was founded on July 13, 1954, located at the western end of the Junggar Basin in northwest Xinjiang, neighbouring Kazakhstan to the north, with a total area of 27,200 square kilometers. Bortala has, under jurisdiction, "two cities" (Bole City, Alashankou City), "two counties" (Jinghe County, Wenquan County), "five districts" (Sayram Lake Scenic Spot, Alataw Pass Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Wutai Industrial Park i.e. ‘Hubei Industrial Park’, Bole Border Economic Cooperation Zone, Jinghe Industrial Park). Moreover, there are Shuanghe City and 9 regimental farms of the Fifth Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the territory of Bortala. Bole City is the capital of the Prefecture. The Prefecture has a population of nearly 475,000 and 35 ethnic groups such as Han, Mongolian, Uygur, Kazakh, Hui, ethnic minorities account for 37 percent of the population.
Bole City is located in the northwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bordering the Republic of Kazakhstan to the north, with a borderline of 69 kilometers. Bole City is 524 kilometers from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Bole City has an administrative area of 7,500 square kilometers, and has four towns, one township, one state-owned ranch and five sub-districts under jurisdiction, also stationed are 5 regimental farms of the Fifth Division of the XPCC. Bole City is inhabited by 28 ethnic groups including Han, Mongolian, Uygur, Kazakh. Bole City is the political, economic, cultural, and transportation center of Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. In recent years, adhering to the philosophy of “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, Bole City has spared no efforts to win the battle against pollution of air, water and soil, and the ecological conditions have been significantly improved. Today, Bole City is an ecological city with fresh air and beautiful scenery, which is surrounded by water and suitable for business and living. Bole City has successively won the honorary titles of National Civilized City, China Excellent Tourism City, National Garden City, National demonstration city of science popularization, National Sanitary City, etc.
The city of Alashankou is located in the western edge of the Junggar Basin, between the Alataw Mountains and the Barruk Mountains. It neighbors the Republic of Kazakhstan to the north, and is 12 kilometers away from the Dostyk Port of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Alashankou City has an area of 1,249 square kilometers, and administers one town and one sub-district. There are 25 ethnic groups including Han, Uygur, Kazakh, Mongolian and so on. The Alataw Pass is located at the forefront of the land bridge economic belt and major international trade corridor that China opens to the west. It is an important fulcrum on the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and an important gateway for Xinjiang’s opening to the outside world. The Alataw Pass takes on the important strategic tasks of opening to the west, especially of trade with the countries of Central Asia, West Asia and Europe. Alashankou has developed into a new frontier port city which integrates customs clearance, trade, logistics, processing, warehousing, finance and tourism. The Alataw Pass has been approved for 9 types of designated port qualifications, including international mail exchange stations, complete vehicles, grain, livestock, plant seedlings, meat, imported fruits, chilled aquatic products, and hazardous chemicals, making it a land port with the most qualifications and functions in Xinjiang. In 2020, the Alataw Pass has been successfully selected in the national logistics hub construction list for frontier land ports.
Jinghe County is named after the Jinghe River, located in the northwest of Xinjiang and is an important town on the ancient northern “Silk Road”. Within the territory of Jinghe County, lies the important ecological barrier in northwest China, i.e. the largest saltwater lake in Xinjiang -- the national nature reserve of the Ebinur Lake wetland, the largest haloxylon forest in Asia -- the national nature reserve of Ganjia Lake white haloxylon, and the largest mobile desert in the Junggar Basin -- the Muttar National Desert Park. Jinghe County has an area of 11,200 square kilometers, administers four towns, one township and two state-owned farms, also stationed are two regimental farms of the Fifth Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. There are 29 ethnic groups living in Jinghe County, including Han, Uygur, Mongolian, Kazakh, Hui, etc.. Jinghe County is located at the western end of the economic belt on the northern slope of Tianshan Mountains. It is the main traffic corridor in northern Xinjiang, where two national first-class ports (the Alataw Pass Port and Horgos Port), two highways (312 National Highway and Kuitun-Sayram Highway), three railways (the Second Eurasian Continental Bridge, Urumqi-Jinghe Railway, Jinghe-Yining-Horgos Railway), and two major energy corridors (China-Kazakhstan oil pipeline and natural gas pipeline) converge, making Jinghe County a major hub for Asia-Europe trade integrating land transport, energy transportation and ports. Jinghe County has been awarded more than 10 national honorary titles, such as the National Health County, the National Advanced Counties of Agricultural and Rural Digital Development, the National Demonstration County of National Unity and Progress, the National Demonstration County of Safe Agricultural Machinery, the National Advanced County of Science and Technology Progress Assessment, the National Popular Science Demonstration County, the National "Two-Plan" Demonstration County, the National Advanced County of Mass Sports, the National Comprehensive Demonstration County of Electronic Commerce into Rural Areas.
Wenquan County is located in the northwest border of Xinjiang, bordering the Republic of Kazakhstan with a border line of 242.6 kilometers, accounting for two thirds of the border line of Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Wenquan County has an area of 5,881 square kilometers, and administers three towns, three townships, two state-owned farms, also stationed are 2 regimental farms of the Fifth Division of the XPCC. There are 24 ethnic groups living in Jinghe County, including Han, Mongolian, Kazakh, Uygur, etc.. Wenquan County is the only county named after the geothermal resource "hot springs" and enjoys the great reputation of "China Hot Spring". In 2018, the county was awarded the national climate logo of "China Summer Resort". Wenquan County was successfully established as a national tourism demonstration area in 2020. Among the 147 springs in Wenquan County, there are three most famous: Bogdal Hot Springs, Eltuokosail Hot Springs, and AlShati Hot Springs, which are known as "Holy Spring", "The heaven Spring" and "Sacred Spring". The water temperature is between 42℃ and 62℃, rich in sulfur, magnesium, iodine, carbonate and other minerals. Wenquan County has established the development strategy of "Ecologically-Established Tourism County", and adheres to the concept of "Integration of City and Landscape, Integration of Industry and City", and "City is Tourism, Tourism is Life". Therefore, Wenquan County is a borderless county with no tickets and no walls. Here lives the relict species of the same era as the dinosaurs, Ranodon sibiricus. It is a primitive amphibian dating back 350 million years, and only exists in the Wenquan County and the Republic of Kazakhstan, and has been listed as endangered animals by the IUCN and China Endangered Animal Red Data Book. Wenquan County is known as the "Hometown of the Qahar Mongolians" and "the hometown of Xinjiang Mongolian short-tuned folk songs". Wenquan County has been successively awarded the honorary titles, such as National Ecological Civilization Demonstration Project, the National Demonstration County of National Unity and Progress, and National Health County.
