On July 5, 2022, Ablikim Abdukadir concentrated on making walnut woodware at his workshop in Bashiazigan Village of Pixina Town in Pishan County, Hotan Prefecture, northwest China’s Xinjiang. When he saw some visitors coming in, he stood up and called his family members to serve tea and receive the visitors.
In Pishan County, local people have a long history of using walnut wood to make wooden bowls, wooden plates, wooden spoons and other living utensils. Ablikim is a well-known wood craftsman in the village. A piece of ordinary walnut wood, after being processed by him, becomes a characteristic wood that is both of practical and ornamental use. He also leads local people to get well-off through this craft. Currently, he has two apprentices, who follow him to learn woodware making skills.
In recent years, the tourism industry in Pishan County has developed rapidly. Woodware of local characteristics has gradually attracted attention and become a hot-selling tourist souvenir. (Correspondent: Ablimit Abdugeni)
