Barkol Lake, known as Puleihai in ancient times, is located about 18 kilometers northwest of Barkol Kazak Autonomous County in Hami City, northwest China’s Xinjiang, with an altitude of more than 1,500 meters. It is surrounded by undulating mountains, snow water from the Tianshan Mountains and natural springs converge into the lake. The lake is rich in brine, mirabilite and salt resources, making it a famous salt lake in Xinjiang. A sand dike across the north and south divides the lake into the east and west part, while the East Lake is rich in green water plants, the salt pans of the West Lake are as clear as snow.
In recent years, the local area has continuously increased ecological protection and restoration efforts with the focus on improving the quality of the ecological environment, presenting a picturesque view of the mountains and lakes.
