Mechanized operation improves efficiency: Ten thousand mu of melons are harvested in Jeminay County, NW China’s Xinjiang

In late August, 2022, ten thousand mu of melons in Jeminay County of Altay Prefecture, northwest China’s Xinjiang, have gradually matured. The villagers seize the time to harvest, showing a busy harvest scenery of mechanization.

On August 27, 2022, a melon thresher was working in the field of Wu Shuai, a villager of Tugaliagashi Village in Wulasite Town, Jeminay County, northwest China’s Xinjiang. The ripe melons were fed into the machine. With the roar of the machine, full melon seeds fell into the seed storage box. Wu Shuai planted more than 7000 mu of crops in 2022, including 1600 mu of melons. This year, his family's net income from melon will exceed 500,000 yuan.

Wu Shuai said, "In the past, our melon threshing machine was old-fashioned, which required the cooperation of 7-8 people, and could only work more than 10 mu of land per day. Now, this new type of melon threshing machine only needs the cooperation of 4-5 people, and more than 200 mu of land can be threshed in a day and a half. In 2022, the output per mu can reach 130 kg."

In recent years, with the popularization of melon harvesting mechanization, it has also created opportunities for agricultural machinery operators. At present, the harvest rate by melon threshing machines in Jeminay County has reached 100%, and about 40 mu of melon can be threshed every day.

Yang Yunfa, deputy director of the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Bureau of Jeminay County, said: “It is the autumn harvest season for melons, and the agricultural department actively coordinates machinery and personnel to help villagers harvest melons."

It is understood that 57,800 mu of various industrial crops were planted in Jeminay County, including more than 10,000 mu of melons in 2022. The harvest work progresses in an orderly manner. It is expected that the harvest will be completed by the end of September, 2022.
