Filling the gap: The first new-type photovoltaic cell project in Xinjiang starts in full swing in Hami

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Wei Yonggui, Correspondent Tian Yu) news: On March 12, 2023, the first high-efficiency N-type TOPCon silicon solar cell project in Xinjiang started full-scale construction in Hami High-tech Industrial Development Zone, Hami City, northwest China’s Xinjiang. The machine rumbled at the construction site and the civil work construction was in full swing.

The project is invested and constructed by Xinjiang Future Dual Carbon Energy Co., Ltd. of Guorun Energy Group. The main product of this project is high-efficiency N-type TOPCon silicon solar cells with a capacity of 3 GW (1 GW equals 1 million kW). According to the 2022 list of key projects of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, this project is the first high-efficiency N-type TOPCon silicon solar cell project in Xinjiang, which will fill the production gap of similar products in Xinjiang after its completion.

In the photovoltaic power generation field, PERC solar cells, referred to as “P-type cells”, are widely used at present. The high-efficiency N-type TOPCon cell is a kind of photovoltaic cell manufactured adopting the new process, which has higher power generation efficiency compared with the P-type cell. And it is considered to be the next-generation of photovoltaic cell technology.

“The TOPCon cell is the most advanced N-type cell in the world, which have the advantages of high photoelectric conversion efficiency, high bifaciality, low-temperature coefficient and low attenuation, and are especially suitable for the application in large ground photovoltaic power station. The photovoltaic power station of the same scale with the application of high-efficiency N-type TOPCon cells requires less space, has lower construction costs, longer module lifespan and can bring higher benefit for power generation compared to traditional P-type cells.” According to An Yanlong, general manager of Xinjiang Future Dual Carbon Energy Co., Ltd. of Guorun Energy Group, after being put into production, the project can achieve an annual sales output of more than two billion yuan and contribute to the employment of more than 1,200 people.

This year, the Government Work Report of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region proposed to vigorously develop new energy, new materials and other strategic emerging industry clusters, and further push forward the planning and development of new energy systems, speed up the development of new energy power generation, power transmission and transformation, and energy storage equipment manufacture, aiming at building a whole industry chain of new energy. This year, Xinjiang will further accelerate the construction of large wind and photovoltaic power bases in the desert and Gobi, building new energy electric power industry clusters, and continuously improving the installed capacity of grid-connected new energy. In Hami City, the goal of the new energy industry development is to “build the largest prefecture-level city in China in terms of installed new energy capacity”.
