Dancing in Churukum Meshrep to experience the beauty of intangible cultural heritage

The Churukum Meshrep, a national intangible cultural heritage from Churukum Village and Kedimuayimake Village in Kartal Town, Aksu City, northwest China’s Xinjiang, is created by the people there in the production and life. As one of the Dolan Meshrep, Churukum Meshrep integrates dances, instrument playing, rap, entertainment, games and other forms, which is a traditional form of local folk entertainment.

“Churukum” means water in the desert, and “Churukum Meshrep” refers to the performance around the water in the desert. It is famous for the performance of imitating animals, which is unique among Meshrep. Approved by the State Council on June 7, 2008, Xinjiang Uygur Meshrep (The Uygur Churukum Meshrep) was included in the first list of national intangible cultural heritage expansion items.

In order to further protect and inherit the Churukum Meshrep, the Aksu City inheritance center of the national intangible cultural heritage of Churukum Meshrep was built in Kartal Town in Aksu City for rehearsals, performances and teaching. The center has become a national intangible cultural heritage inheritance base.

In 2005, Kartal Town established the Folk Art Troupe. In July 2020, the team was optimized, and the cultural club of Churukum Meshrep was founded. At the same time, free training courses have been held regularly every year to invite the lovers of Churukum Meshrep in Aksu to learn and study.
