Night economy in Urumqi City, NW China’s Xinjiang

On July 3, 2023, the night market at CC MALL in Urumqi City, northwest China’s Xinjiang, became livened up as usual. Cries of sellers in the streets together with the laughter and chatter of diners formed a bustling scene that is staged every day in the city.

“The buildings are gorgeous, the scenery is beautiful, and the performances are unique. These all make the trip worthwhile.” On July 2, 2023, Zhang Xiaopeng, a citizen of Urumqi, purposely avoided the evening rush hour to visit Tianshan Mingyue City in Shuimogou District, Urumqi City, northwest China's Xinjiang. After 11 p.m., the park was still bustling with visitors who were captivated by the park featuring characteristics of Tang dynasty, and they didn’t want to leave. Tianshan Mingyue City is a new night economy cultural tourism park in Shuimogou District, which will continue to improve supporting services after its completion and strive to become a new landmark of night tourism economy in Urumqi.

At night, the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar is as crowded as it is during the day. Every night around 11 p.m., the shops on the first floor of the buildings are full.

In order to taste the cuisine in the night market, Gong Wanzhen, a tourist from east China's Jiangxi Province, along with his four friends, wandered and ate at the night market until 12 o'clock at night.

The Haochi food court night market next to the Nanhu Square is located near the residential area and is one of the popular destinations for citizens and tourists to enjoy their night.

A number of container stores have been set up on Nanhu South Road, offering fried chicken, milk tea, ice cream and general merchandise. Wang Bingwen runs a novelty snack — rice-flour noodles with mashed potatoes. He said that the streets and alleys are becoming good places for people to relax at night.

From the beginning of 2023, all kinds of concerts, music festivals and stage productions have been held in northwest China's Xinjiang.

At the end of May this year, the influential domestic music festival brand, Strawberry Music Festival, kicked off in Urumqi for the first time, with performances lasting from afternoons until late at night. According to statistics, 46,000 tickets have been sold, which broke the box office record in Xinjiang. The 2023 Wusu Beer Festival in Urumqi followed, and the first local music festival brand in Xinjiang, "Jiang Guo" Music Festival, was held.

The audience of the music festival includes citizens of Urumqi, fans from other places in Xinjiang, and tourists who traveled to Xinjiang. Ji Lei, director of Beijing Fanxi Music and Culture Development Co., Ltd., who is the operator of "Jiang Guo" Music Festival, said that the festival is not only a music feast, but also a culture feast. The festival brings new opportunities for the music industry in Xinjiang and promotes the prosperous development of music culture in Xinjiang.

Nighttime cultural entertainment is abundant in Xinjiang. The nationally acclaimed Mahua FunAge performs in Urumqi. Xinjiang Xiangsheng Bazaar, the Red Star Xiangsheng Club and other clubs make the nights in Urumqi full of joy.

Data shows that during June 28-July 2, 2023, Urumqi City received a total of 3,685,400 domestic tourists, achieving a tourism income of 3.536 billion yuan, an increase of 62.52%. Xinjiang has received a total of 9,477,200 tourists, achieving a tourism income of 9.193 billion yuan. The nighttime tourism consumption contributes a lot.
