Road of Prosperity: Domestic automobiles exported overseas through the China-Europe freight trains

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporters Chen Qiangwei, Lu Fengbao) news: Recently, A Chinese man bought a Changan automobile for his father-in-law in Kazakhstan, which was shipped to Kazakhstan through the Horgos Port.

As soon as the video was posted, the filial man quickly became popular on the internet, which also allowed domestic automobiles to get more followers.

On August 13, 2023, reporters of the “Road of Prosperity—Belt and Road Reporting Project” launched by the Xinjiang Daily visited the production workshop of Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., Ltd., (hereinafter referred to as Changan Auto) to see how Changan automobiles are manufactured and can be taken on the China-Europe freight trains (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe) to enter the markets in Central Asia and Europe.

In Liangjiang New District of Chongqing Municipality, automobile enterprises would be seen from time to time through car windows. Not long after, the Liangjiang Assembly Plant 2 of Changan Auto appeared in front.

The plant seemed to be very empty, with roads leading to different production workshops of stamping, welding, painting and general assembly.

Walking into the second general assembly shop, the final part of automobile manufacturing, with mechanical arms running constantly and unmanned logistics trolleys shuttling back and forth, the automated production line is in full swing.

In the interior trim assembly shop, the automobiles move slowly forward on the production line, with workers installing wiring harnesses, rubber strips, armrests and other parts.

Teng Zhao, team leader of group one of the first interior trim assembly shop, pays close attention to the production process to solve problems at any time. This 28-year-old young man has been working in Changan Auto for more than six years and is very experienced. “I know if it is exported car as soon as I see the order.”

In order to adapt to the different overseas markets, Changan Auto customizes its export automobiles according to the climatic, cultural and policy differences and the needs of users in different areas, which is the reason why Teng Zhao clearly knows which type of automobile will be exported to a particular overseas market.

Over the years, Changan Auto has developed with the construction of the Belt and Road, and its overseas sales have increased year by year. According to the statistics in 2022, Changan Auto’s overseas sales of automobiles from self-own brands were 169,773, an increase of 48.83% year-on-year. In the first six months of 2023, its overseas sales of automobiles from self-own brands were 116,000, an increase of 14.3 % year-on-year, of which nearly 20,000 automobiles were shipped to Central Asia and Europe through the China-Europe freight trains (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe).

“The export orders are increasing. So as the amount of work. But I don't feel tired thinking that the automobiles I produce can be sold abroad,” Teng Zhao said.

After completing the interior decorations, through the chassis testing and other processes, automobiles with both dynamism and beauty successively left the production shop, and part of these automobiles are sold in the domestic markets, and others enter the overseas market through the China-Europe freight trains (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe).

“We transport some of the new automobiles to the freight yard and then ship them out on the China-Europe freight trains,” said Feng Xi, a staff member of Chongqing Changan Minsheng Logistics Co., Ltd.

At the parking lot of Chongqing Railway Container Centre Station, rows of cars are neatly parked, waiting to take the China-Europe freight trains.

“The automobiles will be loaded into containers for export,” said Xiao Jinjun, manager of the port operation department of Chongqing Fanou Railway Port Operation and Management Co., Ltd. Since this year, the number of the China-Europe freight trains loaded with new automobiles has increased significantly to 4-5 trains a month, and can reach 8-10 trains at most.

Now, the China-Europe freight trains carrying domestically produced automobiles are departing every day through the Alataw Pass and Horgos Port in northwest China’s Xinjiang.

According to the statistics of Urumqi Customs, in the first half of the year, nearly 120,000 commercial automobiles were exported through Alataw Pass and Horgos Port under the supervision of Urumqi Customs, and more and more domestically produced automobiles are entering the homes of people overseas.
