(Painted by Laili / Tianshannet)

Winter Solstice, also known as Dongzhi in Chinese, is the 22nd of the 24 Solar Terms on the Chinese lunar calendar. It falls on December 22nd this year. On the first day of Winter Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest day and the longest night in the year, as the sun shines directly at the Tropic of Capricorn. Winter Solstice also marks the arrival of the coldest season. Northern China has maintained the tradition of eating dumplings on this day, while people in southern China eat tangyuan, or rice ball soup.
