Winter fishing festival to be held in Fuhai County, NW China's Xinjiang

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Jaynar Nurlanbek, Correspondent Zhuang Xiaopo) news: On January 9, 2024, according to the Cultural, Sports, Radio, Television, and Tourism Bureau of Fuhai County in Altay Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the 17th Ulungur Lake Winter Fishing Festival in Fuhai County will open on January 20, 2024.

“As one of the important activities of winter ice and snow tourism in Xinjiang, the Ulungur Lake Winter Fishing Festival has attracted much attention from both domestic and foreign tourists. The 17th Ulungur Lake Winter Fishing Festival is also one of the series of activities of the Xinjiang Snow Festival. This winter fishing festival not only allows visitors to witness spectacular scenes such as lifting a large kilometer-long winter fishing trawler net, but also to participate in the exciting auctions of the largest fish, experience the intense and thrilling ice dragon boat races, and feel the unique local fishing and hunting culture. We welcome visitors from all over to come to Fuhai in 2024 to enjoy ice and snow, winter fishing, and taste fresh fish!” said Wang Ming, secretary of leading Party members group of the Cultural, Sports, Radio, Television of Fuhai County.

During the 17th Ulungur Lake Winter Fishing Festival in Fuhai County, visitors can also participate in various ice and snow entertainment projects such as ice skating, snowmobiles, ice biking, bumper balls, horse-drawn plows, ice banana boat rides, snow zorbing, ice fishing in igloos, and spinning tops. People can also enjoy performances and exhibitions relating to intangible cultural heritage as well as folklore culture, watch ice fishing demonstrations, and participate in traditional Chinese costume shows. With the beautiful winter scenery of Ulungur Lake, visitors can also taste various local delicacies and purchase a wide range of New Year goods. This year's Winter Fishing Festival will also host activities such as the Xinjiang Glacier Fish Banquet, the Akewutikele Village Bonfire Evening and Electronic Music Festival, group weddings on the ice, the Buzkashi (horseback competition for possession of a goat), horse racing, camel shows, and many other exciting events.

The traditional winter ice fishing with large trawler nets on Ulungur Lake has a history of more than 60 years. This kind of winter fishing festival is now only found in the Chagan Lake in northeastern China and Ulungur Lake in Fuhai County, Altay Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The spectacular fishing scene is worth watching.
