In 2023, the total electricity sales volume of all industries in Xinjiang was 162.03 billion kWh, accounting for 89.62 percent of the total electricity sales volume, a year-on-year growth of 13.34 percent. Among them, the electricity sales volume of primary industry was 2.94 billion kWh, accounting for 1.81 percent of the total industry sales, a year-on-year growth of 9.32 percent; the electricity sales volume of secondary industry was 115.43 billion kWh, accounting for 71.24 percent of the total industry sales, with a year-on-year growth of 15.58 percent; and the electricity sales volume of tertiary industry was 43.66 billion kWh, accounting for 26.95 percent of the total industry sales, a year-on-year growth of 8.05 percent. From the perspective of electricity consumption, secondary industry is the "main force" driving the growth of electricity sales.
From the electricity consumption data of specific industries, the industrial, wholesale and retail trade, and agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery were the top three industries with the largest year-on-year increase in electricity consumption. The industrial electricity sales volume was 114.81 billion kWh, and achieved an increase of 16.19 billion kWh year-on-year, 11.52 billion kWh of which was in manufacturing industry, and 1.59 billion kWh of which was in the mining industry; the electricity sales volume of wholesale and retail trade was 59.59 billion kWh, with an increase of 1.3 billion kWh; the electricity sales volume of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery was 14.2 billion kWh, with an increase of 0.84 billion kWh. The accommodation and catering industry, wholesale and retail trade, and industrial sector were the top three industries with the highest year-on-year growth rates, with growth rates of 31.77 percent, 27.94 percent, and 6.41 percent respectively.
In 2023, the electricity sales volume for urban and rural residents reached 18.77 billion kWh, accounting for 10.38 percent of the total electricity sales volume, a year-on-year growth of 3.3 percent.
"Electricity consumption is a barometer of the economy. The record high electricity sales volume in 2023 reflects the sustained and stable economic development in Xinjiang," said He Huimei, director of the electricity payment and settlement department of the marketing service center of State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. In particular, the significant growth in electricity consumption in the secondary industry further indicates the solid and steady trend of economic development in Xinjiang. From the data of subdivided industries, we can see that industrial and agricultural production, commercial activities, and tourism economic development in Xinjiang are in good condition, and the overall business environment is constantly improving.
