In the early morning of May 11, 2024, Dai Jianfeng, a well-known star photographer captured the aurora in Altay, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
He said, "My dream came true! I encountered the best auroras in 20 years in Altay, Xinjiang. The giant geomagnetic storm produced colorful auroras, and the whole sky was red. We could clearly see various auroras changing constantly. In addition to red, rare green and purple auroras also appeared. It was really dreamy!"
Previously, the National Space Weather Monitoring and Early Warning Center of the China Meteorological Administration issued a geomagnetic storm warning. Due to the impact of multiple coronal mass ejections, geomagnetic activity may occur on May 10 and 11 of 2024. Among them, a moderate or above geomagnetic storm may occur on May 11. It is expected that geomagnetic activity will continue until the 11 or even the 12. During that period, auroras would also appear. (Photo and video provided by Dai Jianfeng)
