Expat Eyes | A South Korean student’s letter to Xinjiang

It was my first visit to your vast and fascinating region, and I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by your landscapes, diverse cultures, and warm people. From the moment I arrived in Urumqi and walked through the vibrant Grand Bazaar, I knew this would be an experience unlike any other. The unique blend of traditional Uygur handicrafts and modern goods painted a picture of a place where history coexists with the present day harmoniously.

One striking feature was the hospitality of the people. Vendors greeted me with smiles and warmth, offering insights into their products and life stories. From the vibrant textiles to the fragrant spices, the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar is not just a market but a window into Xinjiang’s spirit—a place where the cultural threads of many peoples are woven together.

Exploring the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum allowed me to further trace your rich cultural tapestry. The Silk Road exhibit vividly illustrates how this ancient trade route fostered cultural exchanges between the East and West, with artifacts such as ceramics, textiles, and jewelry reflecting influences from Central Asia, South Asia, and beyond. This highlights Xinjiang’s historical significance.

The museum also sheds light on how various ethnic groups, from Uygurs to Kazaks, have shared this land and enriched its traditions through cooperation. It was inspiring to see how these groups maintained their unique identities while contributing to a shared cultural legacy.

Outside of the cities, the natural beauty of Xinjiang’s landscapes is truly awe-inspiring. The rolling Tianshan Mountains and vast grasslands filled with herds of livestock showcase nature’s majesty and purity. It’s no wonder that you have inspired countless travelers and writers throughout history.

Comparing my experience here with my life back home, I couldn’t help but appreciate the striking differences and similarities. The unique cultural blend I found in Xinjiang is something that makes it distinctive, yet the hospitality and warmth of the people reminds me of my own culture’s values.

I hope to return soon to continue my journey through Xinjiang’s cities, mountains, and villages, deepening my understanding of this incredible land and sharing its beauty with the world.
