Expat Eyes | Xinjiang is a beautiful place

In a way, 2024 has been an auspicious year for me as I had the opportunity to fulfill a longstanding aspiration in April by successfully conducting my inaugural field trip to Xinjiang.

In the hearts of many overseas Chinese, Xinjiang is a unique region characterized by vast grasslands, pristine azure skies, majestic Tianshan mountains, and the rich cultural heritage of all ethnic groups. All these elements evoke a deep longing for distant Xinjiang.

In Australia, there is also a significant Uygur community from China’s Xinjiang. I have a close friend named Arzigvl, with whom I once participated in the National Day celebration in Sydney. Aware of my deep interest in Xinjiang, Arzigvl always assures me: 'I will personally accompany you on a visit to Xinjiang.'

Although I did not receive Arzigvl's promise, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to participate in an overseas media delegation to Xinjiang in April this year.

In my week-long visit, what impressed me most was the sight of people singing and dancing with joy in every corner, whether it was in residential areas in Korla, the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar in Urumqi, the People's Square in Kashi, or the night market in the ancient city. Their faces were filled with happiness and optimism, constantly infecting me. Even though I couldn't dance well myself, I couldn't help but join their dancing groups multiple times to experience the joy of this way of life.

During my week in Xinjiang, in addition to participating in group activities, I also took advantage of the evenings to immerse myself in the vibrant night market of the ancient city of Kashi. The plethora of delectable delicacies, budget-friendly prices, and an extensive array of fruits and local specialties proved irresistible, prompting me to indulge in a shopping spree. Consequently, I procured numerous souvenirs from Xinjiang for my three children.

My son recalls his previous year's journey, during which he embarked on an extensive overland expedition across multiple countries in Central Asia from Australia, encompassing Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. Specifically capturing the moment at the border crossing between Kyrgyzstan and China’s Xinjiang, he thoughtfully shared the photograph with me knowing my long-standing desire to visit Xinjiang. Moreover, he eagerly anticipates scaling the Tianshan mountains in the future.

The trip to Xinjiang was brief yet remarkable. I aspire for another opportunity to revisit the exquisite Xinjiang, as there remains innumerable unexplored destinations.
