Flocks of gazella subgutturosa appear in Manas County, NW China’s Xinjiang

In early spring, flocks of gazella subgutturosa appeared in the northern desert of Manas County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. They lower their heads to forage or stand alert, bringing vitality and liveliness to this quiet desert.

Gazella subgutturosa is a national second-class protected wild animal. It resembles the Mongolian gazelle in shape. The throat of the Gazella subgutturosa swells during the mating season, resembling a goose's throat. The appearance of groups of gazella subgutturosa marks a significant improvement in the desert ecological environment in the northern part of Manas County.

It is understood that the total area of the desert in the northern part of Manas County is 352,000 hectares, located on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin, in the middle section of the Gurbantunggut Desert. In recent years, Manas County has intensified efforts to protect and restore the ecological environment. Through a series of ecological management projects such as afforestation and soil and water conservation, a stable habitat and breeding environment have been created for wild animals such as the gazella subgutturosa.
