Katman Bazaar in NW China’s Xinjiang draws visitors from far and wide

Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Wang Xinhong) news: Walking through the ancient city of Kashi, the air is filled with a symphony of clanging sounds. Among them, the rhythmic hammering emanating from the Iron Commune of the Katman Bazaar possesses a unique allure, consistently drawing visitors from far and wide to pause and observe.

Named after the production and sale of tools such as Katman, Katman Bazaar has established an Iron Commune aimed at preserving and promoting the craftsmanship of iron production. Today, the iron products crafted here have gained a modest reputation throughout the region and have become a significant attraction within the ancient city of Kashi.

As one enters, they will witness Mijit Mamat, an inheritor of ironware-making craftsmanship, along with several artisans, skillfully transforming glowing red-hot iron blocks into various practical tools amidst a shower of sparks, eliciting expressions of wonder from those watching.

The handcrafted ironwork involves a complex series of processes, including model design, material cutting, polishing, and manual engraving. Currently, the ironworks collective produces four main categories of products: agricultural tools such as Katman, sickles, and shovels; household items including knives, scissors, spatulas, and iron kettles; livestock tools like iron claws, brushes, and stakes; and woodworking tools such as saws, hammers, and axes.

Mijit began learning the craft of ironwork from his father at the age of eight. Over the decades, he has honed his skills and become a renowned blacksmith, both locally and nationally. "Many visitors say that the iron pieces I create resemble works of art," Mijit said.

The ironware-making technique is a significant aspect of China's cultural heritage, recognized for its long history, rustic designs, and distinct regional characteristics. As production methods evolve and living standards improve, the techniques and functionalities of ironwork have also transformed, leading many to choose handcrafted iron artifacts as gifts for friends.

With Mijit's guidance, Zhang Zhenjiang, a tourist from southwest China's Sichuan, experienced the iron forging process. As the hammer struck repeatedly, the solid iron block began to take shape. "This skill has given me a sense of authenticity and joy that I've never felt before. I hope it continues to be passed down," Zhang expressed after the experience, selecting several handcrafted long-handled iron spoons to send to a chef friend via express delivery.

The growth of the tourism industry has also transformed Mijit's role. While producing ironwork, he now introduces traditional forging techniques to visitors from various regions. "I never expected that so many people would appreciate traditional ironwork, nor did I anticipate becoming a professional model showcasing iron craftsmanship," Mijit said, beaming with pride as he polished a wax figure modeled after himself.

Nowadays, Mijit frequently receives personalized orders from tourists, such as teapots, iron woks, and ladle... "These orders have inspired me with ideas that differ from traditional production concepts, allowing this craft to rejuvenate through its inheritance," he said.
