"Hey there, check out these jujubes from Xinjiang. They're so plump and juicy." "Melons from Payzawat are now available. Everyone, place your orders!"
In the fields of Kashi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a wave of enthusiasm for live streaming has swept through. Farmers, village officials, and young entrepreneurs from 12 counties and cities hold mobile phone stands and promote local products such as jujubes, walnuts, and the exquisite Atlas silk in their live-streaming sessions.
At the training base in Xietidun Township, Makit County, a course themed on empowering rural revitalization with short videos is in progress. In the class, instructors demonstrate and teach the use of intelligent tools like DeepSeek, helping trainees learn how to optimize short video composition with AI algorithms, accurately target user profiles, and adjust marketing strategies in real-time based on live-streaming data analysis.
"Before, I thought live streaming was just talking to a phone. Now I realize there's a ‘smart brain' behind the traffic," said trainee Aimaljan Aili, expressing his amazement.
In recent years, Kashi has strengthened e-commerce talent training through government-enterprise collaboration and support from Xinjiang-assisting provinces and cities, creating a environment for e-commerce talent development and empowering rural revitalization.
As Kashi continues to push forward with e-commerce talent training, provinces and cities involved in the pairing assistance program are also stepping up their efforts. One such initiative involves a collaboration with a major e-commerce platform, providing trainees with comprehensive support that covers product selection, warehousing, and logistics. In a program launched in 2024, a group of trainees gained practical skills in short video creation and intelligent data analysis through hands-on training and received exclusive support to boost their online presence. An official from the regional aid command explained that by bringing in experts to teach in Kashi and organizing study tours for local e-commerce trainees, this dual approach has enabled participants to transform from "field streamers" to "digital new farmers."
In a large-scale agricultural product traceability live-streaming event, the live stream attracted over 1.151 million viewers, with total sales exceeding 1.3 million yuan (about 0.18 million U.S. dollars). This allowed high-quality products to be sold at premium prices, and plums from Payzawat gained wider recognition.
The deep integration of technology and agriculture is leading to continuous growth in agricultural product sales revenue in Kashi. Yopurga County and Kargilik County have been awarded as national comprehensive demonstration counties for e-commerce entering rural areas twice. Local specialties such as melons and plums from Payzawat, and jujube from Makit are being sold nationwide through live-streaming, transforming traditional "local goods" into trendy products. The added value of Kashi's rural agricultural products is gradually increasing, and farmers' incomes are steadily rising.
In August 2023, Kashi launched a revitalization initiative. The National Rural Revitalization Administration, the China Rural Distance Education Network, and other relevant organizations jointly promoted the program. Through a series of training sessions, a large number of e-commerce professionals were specifically trained for Kashi, helping farmers transition from "knowing how to farm" to "knowing how to sell," and changing their models for increasing income and becoming wealthy.
"To foster the growth of Kashi's e-commerce sector, the local commerce bureau will further enhance the ability of various functional departments and enterprises. This includes conducting live-streaming e-commerce business, improving the professional quality of e-commerce practitioners, and regularly promoting e-commerce talent training to boost the high-quality development of the e-commerce industry in Kashi," said Wang Lan, an official from the Market Construction Department of the Kashi Prefecture Commerce Bureau.
As twilight descends, the live streaming session in the jujube orchard of Makit County remains brightly lit. "New farmers" are promoting plump jujubes through live streaming, with the melodious rhythm of the Twelve Muqams faintly audible in the background.
In Kashi Prefecture, a group of individuals tasked with promoting the countryside, having obtained their credentials, took up their roles. They brought the traditional naan straight from the naan pit and the vibrant bazaars all the way to the digital "cloud" and the social media platforms. Through countless mobile phone screens, they vividly told the stories of rural revitalization in Kashi.
