As the main hub for international mail imports, exports, and distribution in Xinjiang, the Urumqi International Mail Exchange Bureau manages the transit, sorting, and customs clearance of all regional international mail. The facility has fully digitized and automated its operations, streamlining processes from declaration to inspection.
Amid rising mail volumes and tighter delivery schedules, the bureau, with strong backing from Urumqi Diwopu Airport Customs, has ensured smooth and efficient clearance. In Q1 2025, the customs authority processed 444,900 locally declared inbound and outbound mail items, an increase of 241.93 percent year-on-year, and 907,700 outbound items transiting from other provinces autonomous regions and cities, an increase of 241.23 percent.
In recent years, as international mail volumes continue to rise, the Xinjiang Postal Branch of China Post Group has expanded its international road and air mail networks, significantly enhancing delivery speed and service coverage. International air routes now enable same-day dispatch and next-day delivery to the five Central Asian nations and Azerbaijan. For road transport, coordination with Kazakhstan Post ensures two weekly truck shipments.
The international mail exchange office features automated sorting lines, smart inspection systems, and advanced IT infrastructure. Its sorting line processes 9,000-10,000 lightweight parcels per hour across 127 sorting bins, with a daily capacity of 120,000 items, efficiently handling outbound mail to Central Asia, Moscow (Russia), and 16 European countries.
According to Ma Ling, director of the Urumqi International Mail Exchange Office, the facility leverages China Post's global logistics network to extend international routes and broaden delivery coverage. This strengthens connectivity with Central Asia, South Asia, Europe, and beyond, offering dependable cross-border shipping support for countries participating in Belt and Road Initiatives and businesses and residents in Xinjiang.
