Shiliuyun-Xinjiang Daily (Reporter Cao Hua) news: At an event held on the morning of May 17, 2025, it was learned that through continuous efforts to strengthen ecological protection, Xinjiang has established a comprehensive biodiversity conservation system. To date, the protection rate for nationally protected wildlife species in Xinjiang has exceeded 75 percent, creating a solid foundation for the survival and reproduction of these animals.
This year's theme for the Bird-Loving Week is "Remove Bird Nets, Strengthen Legal Protection, and Let Birds Fly Freely."
At the event, volunteers from the Xinjiang Wildlife Conservation Association led children in reading a pledge. They called on the public to firmly oppose illegal hunting, trading, and consumption of wild animals and plants, as well as any actions that destroy habitats. They also encouraged active participation in public welfare activities such as wetland conservation and desert vegetation restoration. Additionally, they advised against feeding or touching wildlife without authorization to prevent invasive species from disrupting the local ecological balance.

Pan Cunjun, head of the Wetland Management Office at the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, introduced that Xinjiang is rich in wildlife resources. The region is home to about 490 bird species, accounting for one-third of the national total.
In recent years, Xinjiang has established six wildlife rescue centers and 118 national and regional wildlife disease monitoring stations. It has also continuously carried out special law enforcement actions and has built and improved a bird ringing network. These systematic conservation measures have yielded significant results. Data shows that Xinjiang has added more than 60 new bird species in the past decade.
During the upcoming conservation campaign, forestry and grassland departments, non-governmental organizations, and research institutions across Xinjiang will conduct educational activities in primary and secondary schools through a combination of online and offline methods.
In addition, the local wildlife conservation association will organize volunteers to carry out bird protection activities in forest parks, wetland parks, and other migratory bird habitats. By distributing promotional materials and stopping environmentally destructive behaviors, they aim to effectively protect bird habitats and promote a positive social trend of public participation in bird conservation.
